Oral health during childhood is more important than you might think. Did you know tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children? Learning good oral health habits early can change a child's life! Poor oral health can cause significant pain, infections, difficulty chewing or speaking, lower self-esteem, decreased school attendance and performance, and an increase in healthcare costs.
Our goal in creating COHELP is to promote child and adolescent oral health with a low-time commitment for school staff and parents. We hope that each child has fun and is able to gain at least one new oral health skill along the way!
Children's Oral Health E-Learning Platform (COHELP) is a set of interactive gaming tools designed to teach school-aged children about the basics of oral health. The information provided by oral health professionals is concise, clear, and easy to understand for the targeted grade levels. The content is therefore conversational and avoids the use of medical terminology. Most importantly this tool is designed to be simplistic in use and fun!
Our vision for this game is that it be used in a way that is conducive to informal learning. For educators, we suggest using this game as an additional tool for free time, indoor recess, or computer dexterity practice. For parents, this could be a great tool to begin a conversation around oral health and teeth brushing in the home!
We recommend running through the game once before having a child complete it independently so you can determine if they will need extra guidance. Audio is required for game play and closed captions are not currently available, so we suggest headphones when used in a classroom setting.
